HENRIETTA ENGLISH. Staged reading of a play by Lee Brady. Director: Andrea Gordon
Cast: Amber Crane, Howard Johnson, Jr., Maureen Coyne, Kim Richards*, Paul Stout, Charles Dean*, Lorri Holt*, Dennis McIntyre*
This new comedy of bad manners is about a young woman who -- like Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler --refuses to play the games required of her in a 1936 Oklahoma small town. The play follows Henrietta English from her early life as an Oklahoma princess, daughter of the town banker and his ambitious wife, to an East Coast private college classroom where she falls into, and runs away from, an unfortunate love affair. Then onto New York City where in a smoky jazz club, she falls for an even more unsuitable partner. As audiences meet Henrietta, she has returned to Newton, Oklahoma and married the dullest man in town. Who unfortunately brings along two dull (but very funny) aunts, Trudy and Loulie. Then there is Judge Black who will go to any length to bed her.But Henrietta is nothing if not resourceful and lives by the song of the Gingerbread Boy—in short, when the going gets tough, Henrietta gets going.
