According to Mahayana Buddhists, the purpose of this life is to help free all sentient beings from the suffering they experience and to help lead them all to peerless enlightenment; a place beyond sorrow. But in order to work the right way for all sentient beings, first we ourselves must reach enlightenment and in order to do that, we need the tools of compassion and wisdom as taught by someone wiser and more compassionate than we; so we do this practice to connect with a guru and to thank them for the teachings they give us.
