In conjunction with Sunday Streets in the Tenderloin, GLIDE will be hosting a day of special activities on Ellis Street between Jones and Leavenworth Streets, which will be closed to cars, on Sunday, July 12 from 11am – 3:30pm. Featuring a massive, large-scale LEGO build with the Play-Well TEKnologies team, a dance party with DJ KINGMOST, Congregational Jenga Tournament Challenge hosted by GLIDE Pastor Theon Johnson III, face painting, games, edutainment, prizes, giveaways, and much more.
In addition to the events in front of GLIDE’s Family, Youth and Childcare Center, the streets of the Tenderloin will be filled with healthy activities, arts, music, Boedekker Park will be open for Zumba lessons and picnicking, the Veteran’s Mural Project and Umpqua Bank will host an interactive temporary-painted intersection. The Healthy Corner Store Coalition will be offering healthy eating demos and information, and there will be a slew of activities for kids of all ages including a beanbag toss, street bowling, a bike swap and more.
“Join us as we bring unconditional love and acceptance to the streets of the Tenderloin,” said Reverend Cecil Williams, Founder and Minister of Liberation of GLIDE. “Sunday Streets is a time to celebrate the vibrant, colorful and culturally rich Tenderloin neighborhood where so many families and children call home,” added Janice Mirikitani, GLIDE Founding President of GLIDE.
Sunday Streets are events that encourage recreation, community activities and fun in San Francisco. Sunday Streets closes stretches of city streets to automobile traffic, and opens them to people for several hours on a various Sundays throughout the year, so participants can enjoy a large, temporary, public space where they can bike, walk, run, dance, do yoga, or do any other physical activity. Non-profit and health organizations offer free activities and share information about their services during the event.
