The Gardening & Cooking Program involves 4 kitchen class rooms, 13 educators, 17 schools and 7,000 students and is a part of the school district's 2020 Vision and Integrated Wellness Policy geared towards ensuring the academic, physical, emotional and social development of all students from preschool through seventh grade. Students learn where their food comes from and that eating well is important for their mind, body and spirit.
Comments Gather co-owner Eric Fenster, "I welcome this opportunity to work with our chef, Charis Wahl, to give back to the community that has supported us for more than seven years and to do so in a way that highlights things that are integral to the beliefs and practices that underlie what the restaurant is all about."
Executive Chef Wahl, on a daily basis, utilizes classic techniques and locally sourced organic ingredients to prepare her seasonal menus that showcase pizza, sustainable seafood and humanely-raised meats all highlighting the unique abundance of Northern California. Her offerings achieve an award-winning balance of meat and vegetarian choices. Gather has been designated a Michelin Bib Gourmand, named a Best New Restaurant in America by Esquire Magazine, and voted a Best California Restaurant in the Bay Area on SFgate.com (sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle).
The contributions of interior designer Nicole Sillapere are reflected in the restaurant's sand and honey-hued color scheme, the re-used leather upholstered beach seats and the generous use of rough-hewn reclaimed wood. A former water tank from Marin County has been turned into tables, counter-faces and a door; plus bleachers from a Sonoma high school are now banquettes and tables while the lights over the bar have been crafted out of recycled vodka bottles. The space is balanced with metal, steel and concrete that combine to create a unique environment. There is an off-street heated and shaded outside patio with a fire pit. Gather also offers group dining and reception options in special rooms at the adjacent David Brower Center.
