Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 6, 7 and 8, at 8 pm and Sunday, September 9, at 3 pm
Garrett + Moulton Productions presents Stabat Mater and Mad Brass, an evening of two world premieres celebrating the resilience and joy of the human spirit in four performances September 6 through 9 at YBCA Theater in San Francisco. Together, the two premieres traverse a vivid visual, musical and theatrical landscape of both the sacred and profane, evoking a journey of transformation and exploring the capacity of the heart to meet adversity with love and grace. Both works feature five dancers and an 18-person movement choir. A special benefit gala supporting Garrett + Moulton Productions' community outreach programs will follow the performance on Saturday, September 8.
Set to Italian baroque composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's soaring work of the same name, Stabat Mater is an intimately reflective work that underscores the inner spirit. The piece inhabits a visually stark but emotionally charged landscape in which the dancers and movement choir ride dark undercurrents of grief and loss as they strive for transcendence. In contrast, Mad Brass propels the 23 performers through a colorful environment of unbound joy. Mad Brass includes visual elements designed by Moulton in a high-energy celebration and is set to recordings of Fanfare Ciocarlia, a 12-piece Romanian Roma brass band whose music has been described as ecstatic, hyper, adrenaline-fueled gypsy music affectionately referred to as "speed brass."
