Across the funding landscape, grantmakers want to understand how artists are engaging with communities. During the event, we will watch segments of each participating filmmaker's work, which will be followed by a conversation about audience engagement and its influence on each participant's respective funding strategies. Some questions around which the discussion might revolve:
Is the community that is the subject of the film also the film's audience? How does one navigate these differences? How does funding the project influence the filmmaker's relationship with the subject?
Participating filmmakers include:
Chris Johnson: Artist; Professor, Photography, California College of the Arts; and Co-Creator Question Bridge: Black Males
Nomi Talisman: 2015 National MediaMaker Fellow (Last Day of Freedom), Kevin D. Wong: 2016 National MediaMaker Fellow (Home is a Hotel)
Moderated by:
Caroline von Kühn Director, Artist Development, San Francisco Film Society
This discussion is free and open to the public and is being put on as part of BAVC's week-long series of intensive workshops with Filmmaker.MBA, which teaches participants how to navigate the independent film world and the distribution process from start to finish. Read more about Filmmaker.MBA at
