Free Shakespeare in the Park: Much Ado About Nothing

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Red Morton Park (see times)
August 13 - August 28 / Saturdays & Sundays at 4:00 pm

For the 40th season of Free Shakespeare in the Park, SF Shakespeare Festival presents Shakespeare's romantic comedy "Much Ado About Nothing".

This beloved classic features the intermingling of two different love stories - Hero and Claudio, whose love is challenged by jealousy, and Beatrice and Benedick who work through their past history with each other to find love again. The villainy of Don John and the malaprop-spouting Constable Dogberry add to the fun!

The play was selected by the company's Resident Artists who felt, according to the Festival's Artistic Director Rebecca J. Ennals, that "after the past 2 years, we were ready for a comedy." Much Ado's humor isn't purely escapist - the darker side of life is very much present, and the lovers have to be brave enough to take risks and be willing to change. "It feels like a good story for our 40th," says Ennals. "Beatrice and Benedick aren't idealized young lovers, they have a history, and they've been burned in the past. Being brave enough to hope, to try again, to get back out there - their story feels right for this moment."

We look forward to performing at a new location in Redwood City this summer. Performances will take place at Red Morton Community Park. Chris Beth Director, Redwood City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department exclaims, "We're delighted to be celebrating the 40th Anniversary production of Free Shakespeare at beautiful Red Morton Park. This active and vibrant community park is a perfect outdoor setting for Shakespeare's classic comedy. Audiences will no doubt enjoy the central location and the incredible performances."

As always, no tickets or reservations are needed. Covid safety protocols in place at the time of the performances will be followed and updates will be posted on the Festival website, sfshakes.org.

To make the show as widely accessible as possible, a recording of the performance will also be made available on a date to be announced.
