Join the San Francisco Democratic Socialists of America and Artist Television Access for a free screening of Blue Collar, a gritty, nihilistic take on working class existence and the failing American Dream.
Blue Collar is the 1978 directorial debut of frequent Scorcese-collaborator Paul Schrader, who had won universal acclaim the year before for his Taxi Driver screenplay. Starring Yaphet Kotto, Harvey Keitel, and Richard Pryor in a rare dramatic role, the film follows a trio of “hard workin’, fucked over” auto workers who hatch a plan to escape their dire financial situation by robbing their own union. Schrader takes this cynical premise for a heist movie and spins it into an examination of alienation, union busting, corruption, and the relation between racism and capitalism.
Refreshments will be provided, and the screening will be followed by a short discussion. A $5 donation is encouraged at the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
About Left Eye Cinema
A joint project between Artist Television Access and the Democratic Socialists of America San Francisco, Left Eye Cinema is a free, monthly, leftist film screening. Our goal is to provide a friendly, non-judgmental place to explore and discuss socialist cinema, as well as movies that are interesting when viewed through a broadly anti-capitalist lens. You don’t have to be a socialist to attend, but it’s a great way to meet them!
