This new version of Flower Drum Song marries a new script by Tony award-winning Asian-American playwright David Henry Hwang with the great Rodgers and Hammerstein music from the original 1958 show. The new version is closer to the themes of the C.Y. Lee novel that inspired the show: cultural assimilation, the relationship between generations, and the struggle to become authentically American without abandoning traditions. A young woman flees Communist China in the late 1950s and arrives in San Francisco's Chinatown to begin a new life. Familiar songs like "A Hundred Million Miracles" and "I Enjoy Being a Girl" sparkle in this new setting.
