Known for big portions, Flames in downtown San Jose epitomizes everything that’s right and good about breakfasts—generous portions, fast service and food that doesn’t amaze but usually satisfies. The breakfast selection is huge, but thankfully it is broken down by category—Benedicts, pancakes, omelettes, etc. I liked the New Orleans Benedict, two poached eggs covered with a spicy hollandaise and sautéed sausage and chile peppers. The downtown scramble—a fluffy mound of scrambled eggs with chorizo, avocado and jack cheese—is a standout, too.
