FIND OUT ABOUT THE PERFECT CONTAINER PLANT FOR YOUR GARDEN

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Santa Cruz Live Oak Grange (see times)
Looking for a container plant which has spectacular flowers?
There is a type of rhododendron, Vireya Series rhododendrons, which have spectacular flowers, and make superb container plants and are perfect for the patio garden. Vireya Series rhododendrons, since they mainly come from the area between the Malay Peninsula and northern Australia, have no set blooming time. Hybrids such as Narnia can be in bloom “thirteen months out of the year”, which was a remark by the vireya hybridizer Bill Moynier, whose garden I saw Narnia in every time I was there.

Many vireyas have fragrant flowers.
On Tuesday February 16 at 7 PM, at Santa Cruz Live Oak Grange, 1900 17th. Avenue, Santa Cruz, California 95062, the Monterey Bay Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will feature a presentation by Christy Hartsell on Vireyas Changing through the Seasons. In our program, Christy Hartsell, who has over 500 vireyas in his garden, will show us how to care for these spectacular rhododendrons and give information on various species and hybrids.
Many Vireya series hybrids were created by Peter Sullivan when he was at the Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco, and he introduced many vireya species into the United States. In California, Bill Moynier, Bill Moyles, Peter Schick, Alex Koomanoff, Carl Deul, Maurie and Fran Sumner, and others, created Vireya Series hybrids which are in the nursery trade.
In the Bay Area, Vireya Series Rhododendrons can be seen at the San Francisco Botanical Garden, the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers, Peter Sullivan’s Vireya Garden at St. John the Evangelist Church, 65 St. Marys Avenue, San Francisco, and the Gardens of Lake Merritt in Oakland.
Christy Hartsell, who lives in Palo Alto, when he gave a program to the Monterey Bay Chapter in 2011, stated that vireyas do better in Santa Cruz than in Palo Alto because it does not get as cold in Santa Cruz. Christy Hartsell recommends that vireyas be grown in containers because of the chance that we might get another Arctic Express.
