With smaller and smaller gardens, and patio gardens, more and more gardeners are getting into container gardening. Rhododendrons, especially Maddenii Series and Vireya Series rhododendrons, make superb container plants. On Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 7 PM, the Monterey Bay Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society will be meeting at the Santa Cruz Live Oak Grange, 1900 17th. Avenue, Santa Cruz, California 95062 featuring a program by Mike McCullough and Jerry Harris on growing plants in containers. John Goolsby, the program director, and a Master Gardener, will introduce the speakers, and towards the end of the program give information on growing rhododendrons and other plants, and answer gardening questions.
Mike McCullough, who lives in San Jose, and took care of his mother’s garden in Aptos when she was alive, currently is not in a financial position to own a garden, but where he lives grows over 100 rhododendrons and other plants including tomatoes in containers. He has grown rhododendrons in 15 gallon containers which thrived in the container for well over twenty years.
Jerry Harris, who lives in Ben Lomond, is noted for the award winning deciduous azalea hybrids which he created. In his garden, many of his plants are in containers.
John Goolsby, a Master Gardener, lives in Boulder Creek.
