Film + Talk - 'Black Jack Pershing: Love and War'

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Arguello (see times)
This award-winning documentary tells the story of the life of World War I General John J. Pershing, perhaps the most remarkable soldier to serve in the U.S. Army. In 1914, General Pershing took command of the 8th Infantry Brigade at the Presidio, where he experienced a personal tragedy so painful he could never speak of it. Subsequently, he commanded two million U.S. troops who helped win World War I and changed the world.
General “Black Jack” Pershing rose to be his nation’s highest-ranking military officer. But hidden beneath Pershing’s iron exterior was a man who endured great personal tragedy and heartbreak. The screening will be followed by a discussion with film producer Barney McCoy and Presidio Trust Historian Dr. Barbara Berglund Sokolov, who is featured in the film.
Barney McCoy is a professor of Journalism. He teaches multimedia, broadcast news, journalism and depth reporting courses at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Before arriving at UNL, McCoy worked as a full-time journalist for 27 years and has been honored with numerous local, regional and national journalism awards. His latest documentary Black Jack Pershing: Love and War is a 2018 recipient of the Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, an Award of Excellence from the Broadcast Education Association, and an Eric Sevareid Award from the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association. The documentary was also honored with a Special Mention Award of Excellence in the 2018 Accolade Global Film Competition.
