In collaboration with McEvoy Foundation for the Arts, SJMA and UC Santa Cruz Institute of Arts and Sciences presents a limited online screening of Isaac Julien's Lessons of the Hour. The ten-screen immersive film installation exploring the life of Frederick Douglass is on view at McEvoy Arts Oct 14, 2020-Mar 13, 2021.
Lessons of the Hour is an immersive exploration of the life of the visionary African American writer, abolitionist, statesman, and freed slave Frederick Douglass. Incorporating excerpts from Douglass' speeches and dramatizations of his private and public milieus, the film offers a contemplative, poetic journey into Douglass' zeitgeist and a forceful suggestion that the lessons of the abolitionist's hour have yet to be learned. A link to watch the single-screen version on November 30, 4 p.m.-12 a.m., will be emailed to those who register. Registration is limited with priority given to students, faculty, and staff of UC Santa Cruz, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and Howard University School of Law.
