ShadowLight Productions is thrilled to partner with 2014 Guggenheim fellow, visual artist and filmmaker, Hamid Rahmanian, to present FEATHERS OF FIRE, a breathtaking cinemascope-size shadow play based on an episode from the 10th century classic Persian epic, Shahnameh (“The Book of Kings”), January 16 – 18, 2016 at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco as part of their FMC Presents series. All ages show.
FEATHERS OF FIRE tells the action-packed magical tale of Zaul and Rudabeh, star-crossed lovers, who triumph at the end against all odds then give birth to the most important mythological hero of Shahnameh – Rostam. This family-friendly show is sure to entertain children and adults alike with its enchanting characters and visually stunning imagery. The show, designed by Rahmanian, utilizes Larry Reed’s hallmark shadow casting methods incorporating over 140 shadow puppets, performers in elaborate masks and costumes, and cutout sceneries, all of which are seamlessly choreographed and beautifully projected by Canon REALiS Projectors on a 15’ x 30’ screen, creating a feeling of “live animation.”
The art direction of the show is based on Rahmanian’s seminal illustrated book, Shahnameh: The Epic of the Persian Kings (2013). The artistic style and imagery established in the book encompasses 500 years (14th to 19th centuries) of the visual culture of the region from India to the Mediterranean Sea. For the first time in ShadowLight’s 40 plus year history, over 100 digitally animated backgrounds by Rahmanian are integrated into the manual world of shadow theatre to lend authentic texture to the project that introduces a new visual tradition to the audience. Original score by the innovative Iranian composers Loga Ramin Torkian and Azam Ail enhance the feeling of authenticity with a modern twist.
There is great power in live performance, Rahmanian believes. With FEATHERS OF FIRE, he hopes to present a more holistic view of Iran. Moving past politics and religion, the show aims to place Iran and its culture in the universal context of a shared and common world mythology. FEATHERS OF FIRE highlights the strength of the culture and promotes a more complex and intriguing view of Iran as well as the rich and positive influence of the region on world cultures.
