OCTOBER EDITION: MODERN CITIZEN

Talk: Building the next ZARA
Recently touted by Racked as the company building the next Zara, Modern Citizen is taking high quality womenswear by storm. We'll visit Modern Citizen’s first retail store and hear from co-founders Jess Lee and Lizzie Agnew on how (and why) they built this direct-to-consumer e-commerce brand for modern women. In addition to sharing the story behind the brand, they’ll discuss what to look for in a co-founder, how to know and build a brand around your core customer (plus how to translate that brand from online to offline, seamlessly), why they decided against traditional fundraising, and more.

About Jess Lee
Jess is the Founder and CEO at Modern Citizen. After graduating from Stanford, Jess got her start in the retail world working for Gap Inc. in strategy and business development. It was there that the idea for Modern Citizen was born, and she launched the brand in late 2014.
About Lizzie Agnew
Lizzie is Co-Founder and COO at Modern Citizen. Lizzie began her career investing in retail companies. After graduating from Stanford Graduate School of Business she joined ModCloth, an e-commerce retailer. During her time at ModCloth, Lizzie ran ModCloth's private label business as well as two growth categories in women's apparel and home goods.
