Enjoy an evening in Old California as the Los Altos History Museum celebrates our rancho heritage with food and entertainment in the Californio style on Sunday, July 14, from 5-9 p.m. on the Museum’s patio.
Step back in time to the gracious pace of life of the Californios who introduced many of our favorite fruits and vegetables, raised cattle, built 21 missions and inspired the writers of Zorro and Ramona. This gala event is tied to the new exhibition, A Place to Call Home: Two Centuries of California Living, which explores the evolution of the family home from rancho days (1776-1821) through the post-war boom to today.
The authentically-styled menu is based on California Rancho Cooking by former Los Altan (and event guest), Jacqueline Higuera McMahan, who lived here “when it was nothing but walnut and apricot orchards.†The feast will include grilled beef and chicken, carne asada, fresh local vegetables, and sauces authentic to the period, plus orchard-fresh apricot desserts (a fruit the Spanish brought with them). Sangria and watermelon agua fresca will also be served.
Attendees are encouraged to dress in period costumes and join the costume contest. For inspiration, search the internet for historic Los Altos area rancho owners Juana Briones and Juan Prado Mesa, media figures such as Zorro, Ramona, and vaqueros (cowboys). Guests will be serenaded by music of Old California that celebrates the rich musical collaboration between the early Californios and the Mission population.
