Fame – The Musical

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Set during the last years of New York City's celebrated High School for the Performing Arts from 1980-1984, Fame - The Musical is a bittersweet and ultimately inspiring story of a diverse group of students as they commit to four years of grueling artistic and academic work. Through candor, humor and insight, the show explores the many complex issues that youth face today: issues of prejudice, identity, self-worth, literacy, sexuality, substance abuse and perseverance.

About OSA

Oakland School for the Arts is a nationally recognized public charter school founded in 2002 by then-Mayor Jerry Brown. OSA balances an immersive arts program with a comprehensive academic curriculum, providing students unique opportunities for learning, innovation, expression and personal growth. Housed in Downtown Oakland’s historic Fox Theater, OSA demonstrates how communities can come together to build healthy and vibrant urban centers.

The Vision

OSA is a natural for producing Fame - The Musical because it makes an immediate connection to our students’ day-to-day lives and highlights their diverse talents. The musical will showcase OSA’s unique place in the Oakland community and our similarity to New York City’s High School for the Performing Arts. OSA’s production of Fame – The Musical will give a realistic and insightful glimpse into life at OSA.

We are excited to have our middle and high school students from eight different OSA Schools of Art collaborate to create this immense production. Co-Directors: Becky Potter and Matthew Travisano, Vocal Director Branice McKenzie, Music Director and Conductor, John Kendall Bailey, Choreographer, Reginald Ray-Savage, Costume Director: Linda Ricciardi, Production and Technical Director: Jean-Francois Revon.
