The California Writers Club (CWC) formed in 1909 when world-famous author Jack London, poet George Sterling, short story writer Herman Whitaker, Oakland's first librarian and California's first poet laureate Ina Coolbrith, and others met for informal literary and artistic salons on lands that are today's 500-acre Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland above Highway 13. It is one of the nation's oldest professional writing clubs. Although named the Berkeley Branch, monthly speaker meetings are held in Oakland today and workshops and other events throughout the inner East Bay.

The CWC is one of the nation's oldest professional writing clubs in the nation. The CWC's mission, going back to its incorporation in 1913, is to help educate writers of all levels in the craft of writing and marketing of their work.

Today, the nonprofit CWC has a statewide membership of nearly 1,800 members and 22 branches. CWC member-volunteers serve aspiring writers, published writers, and supporters by providing writing conferences, contests, critique and support groups, workshops, and publishing opportunities.
