Expand: Breaking Barriers with Wendy MacNaughton and Sarah Rich

Wendy MacNaughton and Sarah Rich are two women who know what it means to break barriers. For the second installment of the Expand Series, we will spend an evening celebrating their new book, Leave Me Alone with the Recipes: The Life Art and Cookbook of Cipe Pineles, which explores the life and work of one of the most influential female graphic designers of the twentieth century.
For the second installment of the Expand Series, Wendy and Sarah will share tidbits about Cipe Pineles life, from being the first female art director at Condé Nast to the first woman inducted into the New York Art Directors’ Club, and just how much she expanded the potential for women in the industry. Roberto de Vicq, the book's designer, will also share stories behind the featured typography.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Not long ago, Sarah Rich and Wendy MacNaughton discovered a painted manuscript at an antiquarian book fair that drew them in like magnets: it displayed a vibrant painting of hot pink beets and a hand-lettered recipe for borscht written in script so full of life, it was hard to believe it was more than sixty-five years old. Completed in 1945, it was a keepsake of Cipe Pineles's connection to her childhood's Eastern European food--she called it Leave Me Alone with the Recipes.
They teamed up with Maria Popova of Brain Pickings and Debbie Millman of Design Matters, along with contributors Mimi Sheraton, Steven Heller, Paula Scher, and Maira Kalman, to present Cipe Pineles's life and work as it should be presented--in glorious color. With Pineles's illustrated cookbook and a section of updated recipes as its centerpiece, this gorgeous volume will delight foodies and design devotees alike.

Her books include Meanwhile in San Francisco, The City in its Own Words (Chronicle), Lost Cat: A True Story of Love, Desperation, and GPS Technology (Bloomsbury), Pen and Ink: Tattoos and the Stories Behind Them (Bloomsbury), Knives & Ink: Chefs and The Stories Behind Their Tattoos (Bloomsbury),, The Essential Scratch and Sniff Guide to Becoming a Wine Expert (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), The Essential Scratch & Sniff Guide to Becoming a Whiskey Know-It-All (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) and the forthcoming Leave Me Alone with the Recipes, The Life, Art and Cookbook of Cipe Pineles (Bloomsbury). Sarah Rich is writer, editor, and brand strategy consultant. She is co-editor of the new book Leave Me Alone With the Recipes (launching Oct 17, 2017, from Bloomsbury), along with Wendy MacNaughton, Debbie Millman, and Maria Popova. Sarah was formerly a senior editor at Dwell and managing editor of Worldchanging, where she co-authored the bestselling book, Worldchanging: A User’s Guide for the 21st Century (Abrams, 2006). She is also the founding managing editor of Inhabitat; co-founder of the Knight-Batten Award-winning Longshot Magazine and the Foodprint Project; and created and edited Medium’s design criticism publication, re:form.
Roberto de Vicq is the principal at his own design firm in SF specializing in publications, restaurant design, and branding. He has an MFA by Pratt Institute and graduated from Type@Cooper. He is also the author of several books featuring his own work. His most recent book To All Men of Letters and People of Substance was selected as one of the AIGA’s 50 best books of 2008. He has received numerous awards from the Art Directors Club, AIGA, D&AD, Communication Arts, Eye, Graphis, How, Print, Type Directors Club and two Webby Awards. He was Vice President of the Type Directors Club and a judge for the typography annual of Communication Arts in 2014 and the chairman for the TDC type competition of 2015.
