Author and urban homesteader K. Ruby Bloom will present a talk and taste of everyday cheese. She'll discuss techniques presented in her new book Everyday Cheesemaking: How to Succeed Making Dairy & Nut Cheese at Home (Microcosm Publishing 2014). If you're thinking about trying your hand at cheesemaking (or if you just like cheese), you'll enjoy this look at simpler cheeses which require little specialty equipment. These are “farmstead cheeses, that anyone can succeed at while holding a baby in one hand, stirring the milk with the other, organizing a party and texting with their feet.†Samples will be provided.
K. Ruby Blume is an educator, gardener, beekeeper, artist and activist. A life-long learner, she has studied everything from permaculture to pollination ecology and has taught herself canning, cheese making and fermentation, as well as how to set tile, install a sink, do electrical wiring, tend a beehive and repair a motorcycle.. Ruby is the founder and director of the Institute of Urban Homesteading, a small school of urban sustainability which promotes localism, self-reliance and community resilience and co-author of the book Urban Homesteading: Heirloom Skills for Sustainable living (Skyhorse 2011).
