A Celebration of People, Plants, and Fungi
Ethnobotany shows us how plants and mushrooms are used by various cultures around the world. At this festival and symposium, you can follow the thread of plant-people back through the ways of all our ancestors. Focus on the Native Californians who've lived on the North Coast for thousands of years, and how they tended the land and its species. See what contemporary indigenous people make from native plants. Learn about this region's ecological history and which plants have been key here for the past 200 years. Take a local plant walk with an herbalist. Listen to a storyteller share plant myths. Appreciate the beauty and utility of things handcrafted from plants today. Make something yourself, learn something new, and have fun learning! We will provide hands-on activities for children.
Deepen your awareness of the natural world by seeing how we all depend on plants in endless fascinating ways.
Talks and slideshows by special guests, in the 180-person auditorium
Exhibits on cultural uses of plants
Hands-on demonstrations, making things from what grows: tools, baskets, fiber, dyeing
Join open-air classes in making string from plant fibers, dyeing cloth with plants and fungi, making paper, and more.
Native plant foods how to grow, harvest and prepare them
Indigenous Native Californian practices using plants
Global ethnobotany practices healing, shamanism, poetry, smudging, adornment
Storytelling: Hear origin myths of key plants and their relationship to other beings, from various cultures

The Ethnobotany Library will open during the festival, with some books for sale and authors signing.
This is an educational offering to the extended community. It is also a fundraiser for Botanical Dimensions, so that more learning events will be possible here in West Sonoma County. We hope this is the first annual Ethobotany Festival!
