Title: Ethics in the Age of Hashtags & Transparency:
#Lessons for the Tax Professional

This four-hour CPE credit program will provide participants with an understanding of: California Board of Accountancy rules, AICPA Code of Professional Conduct, AICPA Statements of Standards of Tax Services, ABA Model Rules, California Bar Association Rules (including recent amendments to ethical standards), Circular 230, Applicable rules of professional responsibility affecting in-house tax professionals, TEI Standards of Conduct.
After Attending this program, participants will be able to---
l Review social science research relating to matters of personal and business ethics, focusing on effect of demographic differences and environmental influences.
l Recognize current ethics issues in accounting (and tax) practice, including the trend toward greater transparency.
l Identify ethical guidance for accounting professionals, such as the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct, Circular 230 (relating to practice before the Internal Revenue Service), and relevant American Bar Association rules, as well as their California counterparts, including emerging requirements concerning the use of social media and the responsibility to safeguard data from potential data breaches.
l Discuss cases involving ethics issues in accounting and tax practice, examples raising professionalism issues for accountants, and the ways that accountants (and the organizations that employ them) can “give voice to [the] values” that undergird the accounting (and tax) profession
The San Francisco Chapter of TEI has been approved by the State Bar of California to provide continuing legal education (CLE) credits. This specific program is scheduled to provide 3.5 hours of CLE credits in taxation based on 60-minute hours. In addition, the chapter follows the continuing professional education (CPE) guidelines specified in the California Chapter of Accountancy Regulations. Based on 50-minute hours, this specific program is scheduled to provide 4 hours of CPE credits in taxation.
