Class Description: Take your leatherwork skills to the next level and learn how to embellish your leather with hand embroidery. This class will be taught by a knowledgeable hand embroidery instructor from the San Francisco School of Needlework and Design.
In this class you will create a sampler of different embroidery techniques while covering concepts including:
Basic information about threads and needles
How to prepare leather for embroidery
How to plan and execute different types of embroidery designs
Basic embroidery stitches such as back stitch, whipped stitches, chain stitch, herringbone, cross stitch and a variety of metalwork embroidery techniques such as couched passing thread, cutwork, and chipwork
Supplies Provided: We will provide scrap leather, thread, and needles for you to practice your stitching. You are welcome to bring your own leather to embroider on, ideally a pattern piece of unfinished leather.
Material Needed: $15 material fee included. All materials will be provided. If interested, please bring leather you would like to embroidering on; raw material only, no finished pieces.?
A little about the instructor: Annalee Levin is a visual artist based in the Bay Area. She studied traditional hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework in the UK and received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She teaches at San Francisco School of Needlework and Design, a nonprofit founded in 2015 to preserve and advance the art of hand embroidery – a globally practiced craft.
