SEE EVENT DETAILS
#ElixirCAWhiskeyWeek presents Wright & Brown
WHAT: Elixir California Whiskey Week presents a week of opportunities to get to know our local whiskey makers.
This session presents Oakland’s first distillery since Prohibition, opened in 2014. Co-founders Earl Brown and Dan Wright designed, built and launched Wright & Brown Distilling Company to make small batch spirits from grain-to-glass.
Elixir California Whiskey Week is a precursor to Whiskyfest San Francisco on November 2nd. Check it out here.
WHEN: Tuesday, October 23rd, 7pm-8:15pm (Come to the bar early, have a beer and relax until we start. Earl's team will be pouring tastes and talking to the crowd during and after the class from 7pm to 9pm)

Overview
Wright & Brown’s whiskey offerings include rye whiskey, bourbon and American single malt. Their whiskies are double distilled on a single 250 gallon Vendome Copper and Brassworks all-copper pot still. They mill, mash, ferment, distill, barrel age and bottle on site. They use on-grain fermentation and distillation and careful technique to create unique, richly flavored and full bodied whiskies. All products are non-chill filtered and contain no additives, flavoring or coloring.
Wright & Brown rye whiskey, batch 2,  garnered a silver medal at the American Craft Spirits Association National Judging in 2018. Batch 1 received a bronze medal at the American Distilling Institute annual judging. Wright & Brown also make bourbon whiskey and as yet unreleased American Single Malt Whiskey.
This unique class will showcase the way mash bills with grains of different origins and ratios affect flavor and character of whiskey. Grain samples will be presented alongside whiskey samples. Some of the whiskies to be tasted include Wright and Brown Rye whiskey: a Pennsylvania style rye made with 70% rye and 30% malted barley distilled on Wright & Brown’s pot still. Also, Bourbon whiskey made with 65% corn, 23% rye and 12% malted barley.  In addition to these two core products, we'll sample a number of other exciting whiskies in development.

ABOUT Earl Brown
Earl Brown grew up on a ranch and farm in the remote Mattole Valley on northern California’s Lost Coast where his family raised cattle and sheep, maintained apple and pear trees and farmed vegetables. Home brewing cider from locally grown fruits and beer making were always a part of the way of life on the ranch.
Now, Brown and his family are growing rye and barley on the ranch for use in whiskey production at the distillery. Earlier this year, Earl delivered the first batch of heritage barley to Admiral Maltings in Alameda. At Admiral, the barley was malted using traditional floor malting methods and shipped back to Wright & Brown for single malt whiskey production. Wright & Brown are excited to have started production on this very special farm-to-bottle whiskey, which will be a true Northern California terroir single malt whiskey. (And the Elixir team was there to mash the first batch!)
Earl is also bringing his farming heritage and whiskey making together in another project: heirloom grain whiskies. Brown and his family are currently seed cropping and testing a number of heirloom barleys, including Bere, an ancient grain from Scotland, and two Luther Burbank barleys, developed by the famed botanist locally in Sonoma County a century ago. With the heirloom grains project, Brown hopes to make unique tasting whiskey from sustainably farmed local heirloom grains.
