WHAT: Elixir California Whiskey Week presents a week of opportunities to get to know our local whiskey makers. This session presents one of the founding families of California craft distilling and its current leader, 13th generation Master Distiller Marko Karakcevic and his dedication to making great California whiskey from great California beer.
Elixir California Whiskey Week is a precursor to Whiskyfest San Francisco on November 2nd. Check it out here. 
WHEN: Wednesday, October 24th, 7pm-8:15pm (Come to the bar early, have a beer and relax until we start. Marko's team will be pouring tastes and talking to the crowd during and after the class from 7pm to 9pm)

Overview
Have you ever tasted the mash, or beer, that your Whiskey is distilled from? 13th generation Master Distiller and owner of Charbay Distillery, Marko Karakasevic, will host a lively seminar on distilling bottle-ready beer into whiskey.
You will taste Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA beer, and then Charbay R5 Whiskey. Then you’ll taste Bear Republic Big Bear Black Stout beer – then Charbay Stout Whiskey. Marko will round the tasting out with a surprise barrel tasting and candid Q&A session. Charbay Distillery has been going strong since 1983, in SF’s backyard of Mendocino County.

ABOUT Marko Karakacevic
Marko Karakasevic, Charbay Distillery Owner & 13th generation Master Distiller
Born in California, Marko Karakasevic grew up around pumps, hoses and tanks. This was his father's world and the family always lived close to the winery where Miles, his father, made wine. Marko graduated from St. Helena High School and spent a year at Davis where he began his studies in sports physical therapy.
In the fall of '95, Marko realized he wanted to apprentice under his father and be the 13th generation to carry on the Karakasevic family tradition. That's when his parents realized: "He's the man we've been looking for."
From that point on, he has submitted to the same tough routine of generations of Karakasevic men and women before him: learning the winemaking, the distilling and the running of a family business where one must wear many hats. The Charbay Distillers' Port is a spirited salute to this father and son team.
Marko conceived the idea of Charbay's whole-fruit flavored vodka program in 1998. He found the fruit and designed the packaging. Now, with two generations of enthusiastic winemakers/distillers behind the Charbay label, there are even more releases of "perfumes for the soul" to watch for.
He became a Master Distiller in 2009 with the release of his Doubled & Twisted Light Whiskey, after a nearly 30 year apprenticeship with his father. By using Gold Medal winning drinking beer as his base "distiller's beer" has also allowed him to change the playing field, and carve out yet another niche.
Give Marko a few days off and he'll head down to Baja. There's a little town where they all know him and he enjoys being on the water or riding four wheelers. Marko, like everyone in this family, likes to travel & explore.
Marko married his long-time girlfriend, Jenni, in April of 2009, and they have two handsome sons together (Miles is seven, Ivan is nearly two). There are high hopes that they’ll follow in their father’s footsteps, as their previous generations have done since 1751.

yes, you must be 21 or older
 
What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
16th Street BART Station, walk 2 blocks WEST from there on 16th.
#22 Bus
street parking is tough on Thursdays. There's a garage on Huff St.
 
What can I bring into the event?
Drinks purchased at the bar. Food can be ordered in (try Caviar.com) and eaten in the bar, but please don't bring dinner into the session.
