Naturopathic doctors are trained to provide primary care and/or naturopathic specialty care. As with conventional medical training, naturopathic doctors attend 4-year graduate level programs and must pass a standardized board exam. Therapeutic training includes pharmacology in addition to complementary and alternative modalities.
The philosophy and basis of naturopathic medicine remains a distinguishing characteristic from conventional medicine. Conventional pharmaceutical treatments like diuretics for hypertension or statins for high cholesterol are geared towards managing symptoms. These modalities have the ability to save lives and our valuable to our complete medical system. But in the big picture, do get hypertension because you have a diuretic deficiency or high cholesterol because you have a statin deficiency? Most likely not. At some point, normal physiologic balance was compromised and our body (as brilliant as it is) has its own unique way of communicating this change in state. By simply treating symptoms, we are quieting our body’s warning signs and ignoring the cause.
Our bodies rely on proper homeostasis for optimal health and imbalance of this system eventually leads to disease processes. The goal of a naturopathic doctor is to restore normal physiology by assisting their client to maintain or return to homeostasis. This is essential for prevention and true wellness.
