This Wednesday we will be showing Double Feature: "Jonas in the Jungle" and "Die Ameise/Animals of Art" by Peter Sempel.

Peter Sempel, born in 1954 in Hamburg, is a German filmmaker and photographer. He grew up in the Australian outback and returned to Germany in 1968. He studied American literature and physical education at the Hamburg-University. Since 1981 Sempel is working as a director of music- and art-films. He worked with Nina Hagen, Nick Cave, Blixa, Lemmy, Kazuo Ohno and many other artists. He lives in Hamburg.

"Jonas in the Jungle" (98 min., 2013) is an essayistic film adventure with Jonas Mekas, legend of film avant-garde, who in 1949 came to New York as a refugee from Lithuania. Mekas worked with many film legends such as Kenneth Anger, Federico Fellini, and Andy Warhol. During the making of Jonas in the Jungle Mekas was 90 years old and dancing, singing, witty and humorous. Jonas talks and films about his "obsession with memory", vividly also in new media. Jonas in the Jungle is a collage of film, poetry, music including some special friends like Martin Scorsese, Patti Smith, David Carradine, Kaspar Koenig and lots of animals like cats, a panther, monkeys and giraffes.

"Die Ameise/Animals of Art" (94 min., 2011) is an art-house film about art, especially from Germany. It starts with the old masters and goes to the present age - a musical meandering collage, "from Menzel to Meese".
Starring (among others) Jonathan Meese, D. Richter, Georg Baselitz, Neo Rauch and with music by Schubert, Antony and The Johnsons, Die Goldenen Zitronen, Neubauten, Yello, Schumann, and Verdi.
