Documentary Film Night | Ghost Fleet

Overfishing in the Gulf of Thailand has depleted one of the world’s most diverse and rich ecosystems, forcing seafood companies further from shore and for longer periods of time to maintain their profits. As it's difficult to recruit individuals for this type of grueling work, huge fleets of unregulated boats rely on human traffickers that provide slave labor to sustain their operations, shuffling people between boats and keeping them out at sea, often for years at a time.
Patima Tungpuchayakul, a Thai abolitionist and the founder of the Labour Protection Network, has worked tirelessly to end this type of human trafficking in the region. Her fearless determination for justice is documented in the film "Ghost Fleet," which follows a small group of activists risking their lives on remote Indonesian islands to find justice and freedom for the enslaved fishermen who feed the world’s insatiable appetite for seafood.
Shannon Service, director producer of "Ghost Fleet," will join us for a special screening and conversation following the film to gain a better understanding of the links between seafood and slavery as well as to learn more about her process in making the film.
