Diversity Film Series Celebrates 20 years

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Sept 27, 7 PM in Piedmont; Oct 1, 3 PM in Oakland

Piedmont's Appreciating Diversity Film Series kicks off its 20th season of hosting free screenings and conversation.

Our Fall 2017 lineup continues to celebrate great documentary films, community discussion and activism.

AND THEN THEY CAME FOR US, co-directed by Bay Area filmmakers Abby Ginzberg and Ken Schneider: Amid today's travel ban and escalating fears for Muslims and refugees, this film looks back 75 years to another dark time. After Japan declared war on the US in 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which forced the internment of 120,000 Japanese Americans for the duration of the war. The film tells the story of upheaval and loss, the hardships imposed by the crude camps built in remote areas, and the economic and emotional toll of this injustice on Japanese-Americans. Featuring photographs by Dorothea Lange, as well as interviews with George Takei and others who were incarcerated then, and are speaking out now, the film brings history into the present. (Sept 27, 7 PM in Piedmont; Oct 1, 3 PM in Oakland)

CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap. As charges of rampant sexism roil Silicon Valley, CODE uncovers the history that led to the male-dominated tech world of today, and showcases the efforts of women computer coders to open this field to girls and young people of color. With its focus on STEAM education for all, CODE should provide a great opportunity to discuss local efforts to make the tech world more inclusive. (Oct 25, 7 PM in Piedmont; Oct 28, 3 PM in Oakland*)

GROWING UP TRANS: What is it like for young children who don't feel aligned with their birth gender as they grow? What is it like for their parents? Even with growing awareness, transgender young people and their families must navigate very real challenges. This film is an intimate, enlightening journey inside those struggles and choices. (Dec 7, 7 PM in Piedmont; Dec 9, 3 PM in Oakland*)
