Henri Langlois championed the collaborative works of director Dimitri Kirsanoff and actress Nadia Sibirskaïa. We present the classic Ménilmontant in a rare 35mm print from the 1960 restoration prepared by La Cinémathèque française. This beautiful and surprising melodrama is an evocative portrait of two young women, orphaned sisters, who live in a working-class quarter of Paris. We pair it with Kirsanoff’s short film portraying a melancholic young woman, Autumn Mists, about which the filmmaker wrote, “I expressed anxiety through drastically changed images in which nature was losing its density and unity.”
