Who will you celebrate and remember who has passed on recently? This fall, at this time of year, when the veil between the living and dead is thought to be at its most diaphanous, you are invited to gather for the seventh annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration on Shattuck Ave. between Rose and Vine Streets in Berkeley
Celebrating those who have passed on, several altars will be created by local artists, and one ofrenda, will be created for and by community members who may bring photos or stories of their loved ones, candles, breads, or flowers to add to the altar.
The Dia de los Muertos Celebration will host food trucks & booths, a wine and beer garden, arts and crafts for sale, DIY art projects for kids and adults, and will offer free skeletal face painting. Costumes and papier mache giant heads are encouraged. Hauntingly beautiful live music enlivens the air.
Cuatli Mitotiana Mexica Aztec Dancers bless the altar. They then lead everyone in a sidewalk candle light procession through the district for about an hour following along a path of strewn marigold petals.
The Dia de los Muertos Celebration is sponsored by the North Shattuck Association, Berkeley Art Center, Andronico's Markets, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Singha Beer, Vintage Berkeley, BETV, East Bay Loop, East Bay Express and Yelp.
Free event! The Gourmet Ghetto is six blocks north of Downtown Berkeley BART. For more info visit
