Design Thinking & Leadership Workshop for Girls (Hosted by the Exploratorium + GDD)

SEE EVENT DETAILS
10am-12pm: Find Your Drive workshop
12-12:30pm: Lunch Break
12:30-2:30pm: Make Your Mark workshop
2:30-3pm: Optional Toy-Building Session with the Exploratorium (parents welcome!)

We believe every girl has the potential to become a leader and create her own change. She just needs the right tools and inspiration.
That's why we founded Girls Driving for a Difference: an organization empowering girls to become leaders of social change through design thinking. We first started teaching our design & leadership workshops for girls in 2014, as a team of students at Stanford University. During the summer of 2015, we road-tripped across the US in an RV for 14 weeks, coaching workshops for more than 1200 girls across 32 states. Today, our teaching materials can be found in the hands of schools, organizations, and passionate people around the world.

What kind of change do you want to create in the world, and how can you begin to achieve this dream today?
This is the question we ask every girl at the start of our workshop, "Find Your Drive." During this session, we help girls:

identify their unique strengths

discover their leadership style and abilities

reframe problems in the world as opportunities

Girls are able to bond, laugh, and be silly, while also learning more about what really matters to them. Each girl graduates from the workshop with their own personal mission statement for improving the world around them.

In the second workshop, "Make Your Mark," we help girls turn their mission statements into reality, as they:

form teams

brainstorm ideas for creating change

use fun arts & crafts supplies (like modeling clay and pipe cleaners) to create physical prototypes of their favorite solutions

Each girl graduates from the workshop with a prototype and action plan they can use with their team to carry their ideas into the real world.

FAQs

Are there any age requirements for the event?
Our workshops are geared towards girls ages 10-15.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
We recommend using public transportation (bus/muni) to reach the event. Learn more on the Exploratorium website.

Do girls need to stay for the full event? What if girls need to leave early, or can only come for the second half of the event?
We highly recommend that girls stay for the full event, since the workshops are very different from each other and are most interesting for girls when they're taught back-to-back. If girls can only come for the first half of the event, please let us know in advance. If girls can only come for the second half, please have them arrive at least 15 minutes early (around 12:15pm) so that we can catch them up on the material they missed in the first half.

Will lunch be included?
Snacks will be provided, but for lunch, girls should bring bag lunches or sandwiches from home.

Can I sit in on the event or volunteer?
If you're interested, come around 2pm (at the end of workshop #2) to watch girls present their ideas for creating change. You can also join girls for the optional Toy-building session at 2:30pm, facilitated by the Exploratorium staff.
The workshop will be hosted in a specific room inside the Exploratorium, so we will meet everyone at the entrance of the museum and guide you to the workshop space.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Email Katie Kirsch at [email protected] if you have any questions. Thank you!
