Recent developments between the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) following the conclusion of the Trump-Kim Summit and talks of denuclearization have led to a renewed interest in North Korea. While the media and international policymakers continue to focus on issues such as hard security, political engagement, and human rights they often overlook the human experiences and realities of North Korean daily life. What does North Korea’s changing social and political landscape actually mean for those living in the country?
In this special event, we will welcome a North Korean defector who left the country a decade ago and has since spent time building a new life in South Korea. This speaker will join former Fulbright Scholar Arthur Choo, an expert on North Korean affairs with particular focus on migration systems and refugee resettlement, to talk about life inside the country. They will provide a deeper understanding of North Korean affairs from an insider's perspective as well as answer questions about the lived experience of DPRK.
