The Davalos Dance Company celebrates 30 years of dancemaking that over the years have addressed rematriation, land sovereignty, colorism, immigration, LGBTQ+ justice, and race. Chicana Choreographer CatherineMarie Davalos uses dance theater to explore and entangle an exchange of Modern Dance with Baile Folklorico and Indigenous movement practices making dances that question heteronormativity, challenge patriarchy, address the ongoing impact of colonization and celebrate the Mexican/Chicane experience.
This 60-minute evening of work is inspired by the Milpa season an Indigenous biodiverse intercropping system in Oaxaca that is centered on Tres Hermanas [corn, beans, and squash], cacao, and chiles. Milpa is central to rematriation and this reciprocity offers an example of how to be in right-relationship to the land and each other.
Collaborating artists include dancers: Gwen Benitez, Citlali Gallo, Rogelio Lopez, Andrew Merrell, Catalina O'Connor, Nina Palada, Micah Sallid, Javier Stell-Fresquez, Shaunna Vella, and Elizabeth Zepeda; with musicians and composers Ayla Davila and Emilio Davalos. The evening will be performed to live-music.
$35-$55.
Presented by Davalos Dance Company.
