CUERPOS LIBRES film series at the Roxie

SEE EVENT DETAILS
the CUERPOS LIBRES series at the Roxie Theater gives the Latinx perspective on reproductive rights and the dangers of living in a post-Roe world through the screening of two vital documentary feature films: ON THE DIVIDE (2021, USA) by Maya Cueva and Leah Galant, and the Bay Area Premiere of FLY SO FAR (2021, El Salvador) by Celina Escher.

ON THE DIVIDE follows the story of three Latinx people living in McAllen, Texas who, despite their views, are connected by the most unexpected of places: the last abortion clinic on the U.S./Mexico border. As threats to the clinic and their personal safety mount, these three are forced to make decisions they never could have imagined. A live in-person Q&A with local filmmaker Maya Cueva will follow the screening, hosted by Isa Nakazawa.

FLY SO FAR tells the story of Teodora Vásquez, a woman sentenced to 30 years in prison for aggravated homicide in El Salvador after having a stillbirth. She is the spokesperson for The Seventeen, a group whose testimonies and cases are evidence of the State's violence against women, but also of collective resilience, solidarity and sisterhood. The screening will feature a pre-recorded introduction from director Celina Escher.
