Conversation On: Skepticism, Reason and The Stories We Tell Ourselves

SEE EVENT DETAILS
BE AT THE TABLE:
For our Fall 2018 program, we will be hosting a three-part series taking a deeper look into the history and psychology of partisanship and public thought in America.                                                We will be gathering researchers, activists and community members as we ask the less comfortable questions of ourselves : How exactly did we get here? How do we move forward?

Fresh off the midterms, join us on the Nopalito patio for our second conversation of the series as we turn our attention away from the headlines for a moment to a night of conversation and self- reflection as we examine American thought patterns.
Piggybacking off of our first conversation on tribalism, we'll use this night to investigate as a community why skepticism, conspiracy theories, and misinformation are all on the rise. We will discuss the pathology of changing public opinion on the trustworthiness of information and our own relationship to our mythologies and the information we consume.
What are the deeper influences of such widespread mistrust? What happens when reason and the obvious become politicized? How do we investigate and befriend our own biases, behaviors and irrationality without fear? How do we extend this to others?
Note: This conversation was originally scheduled for November 15th, but had to be rescheduled due to poor air quality.

Your ticket will include margaritas, wine, and a seat at the table for conversation over a four-course, family style dinner.
100% of ticket sales will be donated to support Youth Speaks -
Through poetry, spoken word, youth development and civic engagement, Youth Speaks aims to deconstruct dominant narratives in hopes of achieving a more inclusive, and active, culture. Believing that young people have the tools to take control of their lives through language, Youth Speaks encourages youth to express themselves using their own vernacular.

Nopa and Nopalito restaurants, servers and chefs will be donating 100% of their food, beverage, time and service in order to support the conversation and the important work of Youth Speaks.
Ticket prices have intentionally been set well below cost in order to ensure more needed and diverse voices can be at the table. If you are able, and so inclined, please consider making an additonal donation to sponsor a ticket and support civics education through Youth Speaks.
Please Note - No one will be turned away from the conversation for lack of funds. Please contact [email protected] in advance for more information.
