A Play by Rob Matsushita

"Welcome to the National Justice Virtual Trial Service. If you are watching me now, you are either 'logging on' from home or a Cordan Kreig hospital or medical care center. Many of you who are either in comas or cryogenic stasis may need to be briefed on the current judicial process, and will receive tutorial guidance throughout the trial. We wish to thank you in advance for your participation and patience.
This room is not real. It is a thought-generated construct. The people around you are other jurors such as yourself, also plugged in virtually, also either comatose, cryogenic stasis, or otherwise suffering from some form of disconnected conscious.
Two cases. No right answers. And only ten seconds to make your decision.
Welcome to jury duty."

In the near-future dystopian world of Civil, all court cases are settled within a virtual reality
simulation. The jury never sees the actual plaintiffs, defendants, witnesses, lawyers, or judge;
rather, they see virtual constructs representing these individuals. The jury, meanwhile, is drawn from a pool of people who are in comas, cryogenic stasis, or otherwise unconscious– people who can easily be ‘plugged in’ to the virtual reality courtroom, with or without their consent. The audience plays the role of the jury, voting on who wins and who loses the case each show.
Civil opens Friday, March 4th, then runs Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through March 19th. All performances are at the Mojo Theatre (one block away from the 16th and Mission BART station) and will begin at 8pm.
