A Carbon Price is Right: California's Drive to Reduce Carbon Emissions
Webinar: Tuesday, September 11, 2018 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM PDT
Direct carbon pricing is generally considered the most effective way to reduce emissions, and implementation mechanisms fall into three main categories: an emissions trading system, a carbon tax, or a hybrid mechanism that combines elements of both. How do these systems work in practice and are voluntary markets and standards a sustainable path forward?  How does carbon pricing impact local and regional economic development and what are the implications for low-income households? This panel will present working solutions in California and a snapshot of the challenges, common features, issues and trends in putting theory into practice.

Panel: Restoring the Climate: Actionable Solutions (10:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
We can restore a healthy climate for future generations. Doing so would require rapidly drawing down and sequestering carbon and protecting Arctic ice. Technologies exist that can accomplish these goals. This panel will explore the mission of restoring the climate and solutions that can get us there.
Panelists:Leslie Field, Ph.D., Founder and CEO, Ice911Brent Constantz, Founder and CEO, Blue Planet Peter Fiekowsky, Founder and President, Healthy Climate Alliance
Moderator:Marianna Grossman, Managing Partner, Minerva Ventures
10 am to 12 noon, Thursday, September 13, 2018
Intended Audience: Investors, Policy Makers, and General Public
Presenter Bios:
Leslie Field, Ph.D., Founder and CEO, Ice911Leslie Field has been working to save polar ice since 2006. An inventor with 54 US patents, she has worked at HP Labs, Agilent Labs and Chevron Research as well as leading a materials consulting group. Dr. Field earned her B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from MIT and her MS and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley, with a minor in materials science. She now leads Ice911 and lectures at Stanford University.
Ice911 is an organization of dedicated engineers, citizens, and scientists with a viable, scalable solution to restore ice in the Arctic, which has lost 80% of its volume since 1979. We are conducting our research in the Arctic by using a reflective silica sand spread on top of ice to increase its reflectivity. If applied in strategic locations of the Arctic, climate-modeling shows that we can rebuild ice volume, decrease extreme weather, and reduce Arctic and global temperatures.
Brent Constantz, Founder and CEO, Blue PlanetBrent Constantz is serial Silicon Valley entrepreneur who founded and led as CEO: Norian Corporation 1987- 1998, Corazon Technologies 1998- 2002, Skeletal Kinetics 2002-2007, Calera Corporation 2007 -2010, DeepWater Desal 2011-date, and Blue Planet 2012-date. Dr. Constantz is the inventor on over 100 issued US patents, with over 100 more currently pending. He is a Consulting Associate Professor at Stanford University, where he teaches biomineralization.
Blue Planet develops and commercializes technology that uses CO2 as a raw material for making carbonate rocks. The carbonate rocks produced can substitute for natural limestone rock mined from quarries, which is the principal component of concrete. CO2 from flue gas is converted to carbonate (or CO3=) by contacting CO2 containing gas with a water-based capture solutions. This differentiates Blue Planet from most CO2 capture methods because the captured CO2 does not require a purification step, which is an energy and capital-intensive process. As a result Blue Planet’s capture method is extremely efficient, and results in a lower cost than traditional methods of CO2 capture.
Peter Fiekowsky, Founder and President, Healthy Climate AlliancePeter Fiekowsky is the Founder and President of the Healthy Climate Alliance and Co-Founder of 300x2050.com. He is an entrepreneur committed to leaving a world we are proud of for our children. He is Founder and President of AVI, LLC., Board member of Repower Capital, Inc. and an MIT physicist with 27 US patents.
The Healthy Climate Alliance (HCA) is a nonprofit education, networking, and advocacy organization that promotes the goals of reversing global warming and restoring a healthy climate. HCA encourages achievable solutions for drawing down excess carbon dioxide from our atmosphere and restoring Arctic ice by 2050.
HCA is dedicated to promoting broad public awareness of the idea of climate restoration as a feasible goal. This is a necessary precursor to widespread demand for a global climate restoration goal and coordinated efforts to achieve it.
HCA and its partner organizations (the Foundation for Climate Restoration, the Center for Climate Restoration and 300x2050 Inc.) operate within an ecosystem of climate restoration-related organizations and efforts. HCA facilitates collaboration between the organizations, connecting climate restoration solutions like carbon dioxide removal technologies with funders, policymakers, media experts, and safety experts. HCA hosts conferences to facilitate collaboration and networking within and between Working Groups.
Marianna Grossman, Founder and Managing Partner, Minerva VenturesMarianna Grossman is Founder and Managing Partner of Minerva Ventures, a consultancy focused on solutions for a resilient future. Minerva advises companies and communities on climate risk, adaptation and resilience, and guides clean tech startups in water, energy, remediation, finance and climate analytics. Marianna brings people and institutions together to collaborate, invent and implement solutions that enhance sustainability and address the consequences of climate change. Her experience spans corporate and non-profit sectors.

Communicating Across the Partisan Divide (12:30 - 2:30 PM)
Although the topic of climate change has become entrenched in the U.S’s broader partisan divide, the increasingly frequent and severe impacts demonstrate the importance of accelerating our efforts to solve it.
Bridging the divide on the topic is an essential step in creating the momentum towards a collective, durable solution. Join Citizens’ Climate Lobby and Joan Blades, Co-Founder of Moveon.org and Living Room Conversations, as we equip you with the communication tools to do just that. The event is structured as a panel discussion followed by guided Living Room Conversations on topics ranging from energy to policy solutions to climate change. These tools have proven effective in the context of US partisanship and are starting to be applied internationally as well.
Living Room Conversations are meant to facilitate a conversational bridge across issues that divide us, utilizing a structure for engaging in friendly and productive conversation with those with whom we may not agree. They increase understanding, reveal common ground, and allow us to discuss possible solutions - all of which bring us closer to collective action.
The goal of this event is to foster dialogue and common ground, and to inspire stakeholders to drive conversations and collaborative efforts forward in this collective battle against climate change.
This event is hosted by Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), a non-partisan, non-profit organization that exists to create the political will for climate solutions. CCL has developed its style of communicating about climate change throughout its 11-year history and applied it in such ways as building a bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus in the House of Representatives which is 86 members strong - 43 Republicans and 43 Democrats.
Other panel speakers TBA. Refreshments provided.

Workshop Leader: Joan Blades
Joan is a founding partner of Living Room Conversations as well as a cofounder of MomsRising.org and MoveOn.org. She is also coauthor of The Motherhood Manifesto and The Custom-Fit Workplace: Choose When, Where and How to Work and Boost the Bottom Line. Trained as an attorney/mediator with ten years experience as a software entrepreneur, Joan is also an artist, mother and true believer in the power of citizens and the need to rebuild respectful civil discourse and embrace our core shared values.

Frontline Communications and Carbon Dividend (3:00 - 5:00 PM)
Communities on the front line of industries such as refining, sewage treatment, shipping and construction are disproportionately impacted by the negative economic and health effects from consequential sources of pollution.  Less well understood are the beneficial effects that a household carbon dividend program would provide to the residents in these same communities.  We as human beings desire being paid attention to, being accepted as citizens worthy of support, and being appreciated for what we can contribute to the well-being of others.  We will bring honesty and open-mindedness in our endeavor to involve all in a non-partisan and collaborative effort to address this serious issue, in which we all have an interest.  The panel will highlight these components by discussing both the negative conditions currently faced by front line communities, as well as the positive economic and other benefits that would be generated by the adoption of a nationwide carbon fee and the distribution of a household carbon dividend.
Format: Panel presentation, followed by Q and A.
Notable Speakers:  To be confirmed
