Circuits Club

Are you interested in learning about electronics, robotics, and microcontrollers? Would you like to learn how to sew a soft circuit using conductive thread or create your own robot using recycled materials? Topics explored in this club will include basic hobby electronics, soft circuits, breadboarding and circuit building. Participants will learn to build circuits using basic electronic components and to control input and output using the popular Arduino microcontroller platform. Come explore the exciting world of interactive electronics with the Maker’s Factory Circuit Club!

Goals

Students who participate in this club will:

Develop an understanding of how electricity and electromagnetics work
Learn about basic electronic components and hobby electronics equipment
Learn how to build simple and intermediate circuits using various techniques
Learn how to program circuits using microcontrollers and open source software
Runs weekly on Fridays from Oct 4 2013 – June 13th 2014 from 3:30-5pm. Classes will NOT be held over the week of christmas, new year’s, thanksgiving holiday or March 31st-April 5th 2014 (spring break).

Weekly Curriculum / Projects

Month One: Homemade Circuits

During the first month of our Circuit Club, we’ll learn how electronics and circuits work at a basic level by building simple, creative circuits using recycled materials, edible materials and everyday household objects.

Week 1: Squishy Circuits

Not all circuits are hard. Some are squishy! Learn how basic circuits work and create a fun, colorful, take-home art project that will light up, spin or make noise using simple electronic components and conductive play dough. Students will also take home instructions for making squishy circuits at home.
Materials: conductive dough, insulating dough, asst 5mm LEDs, small DC motors, small piezo buzzers, 4 AA battery holders, AA batteries, craft supplies (for decorating)

For children aged 9-12

Price: $35

Register for week one here: http://circuitsclubwk1oct41013.eventbrite.com/

Week 2: Cardboard Circuits

Learn how basic circuits work and build a functioning circuit out of recycled materials.
Materials: cardboard, brass fasteners, paper clips, buzzers, electrical tape, 3v batteries, asst 5mm, LEDs, craft supplies (for decorating)

For children aged 9-12

Price: $35

Register for week two here: http://circuitsclubwk2oct112013.eventbrite.com/

Week 3: Citrus Circuits

Learn how batteries work and use citrus fruits to make a battery and power a clock!
Materials: multimeter, batteries (asst 9v, 3v, 1.5v), lemons, alligator clip test leads, pennies, paper clips, alarm clock (thrift store), asst 5mm LEDs

For children aged 9-12

Price: $35

Register for week three here: http://circuitsclubwk4oct182013.eventbrite.com/

Week 4: Kitchen Circuits (with Makey Makey)

Learn about electrical conductors and resistors and build circuits with common objects found in the kitchen – including food! We’ll make some fun and functional musical circuits using the Makey-Makey, and test our circuits for resistance using a multimeter. NOTE: Parents should inform MakersFactory staff or instructor of any food allergies.
Materials: assorted fruits and veggies / snack foods, assorted kitchen utensils, paper cups, aluminum foil, multimeters

For children aged 9-12

Price: $35
