CinemaLit: Trouble in Paradise (1932)

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
Miriam Hopkins, Herbert Marshall
Special guest: Joseph McBride, author of How Did Lubitsch Do It? (2018)

A suave jewel thief, a beautiful pickpocket, and the wealthy widow they seek to rob form this amorous triangle set in luxurious Venice. Another witty Pre-code film, Trouble in Paradise is more about class and sex than romantic love. Kay Francis is the capable, intelligent Madame Mariette Colet, the owner of a famous perfume company, Herbert Marshall is the seductive gentleman thief and Miriam Hopkins is his light-fingered partner in crime. Depression era audiences were likely delighted to escape into a high society milieu where they could enjoy the beautiful clothes and jewelry while rooting for two well-dressed criminals out to stick it to the rich folks.
