Directed by Mike Leigh
Brenda Blethyn, Timothy Spall
A woman seeks out her birth mother in this masterpiece of domestic drama, social pressure and class analysis.
Hortense Cumberbatch is a successful black optometrist in her thirties, who seeks out her birth mother, Cynthia, who, it turns out, is not only white, but working class. The upheaval caused by Hortense confronting her mother is less about race than it is about secrets, lies, and family dynamics, and Mike Leigh handles it all with compassion and insight. Brenda Blethyn is touching and believable as the unhappy Cynthia, and Timothy Spall is excellent as her exasperated peacemaker brother, Maurice.
