CinemaLit: Ninotchka (1935)

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas

This time, Lubitsch takes us to Paris, where the city’s charm seduces the most hardened Soviet ideologue. After three Russians visit the City of Lights to sell off confiscated jewelry, their reluctance to return home prompts a visit from the stern Nina Ivanovna Yakushova. Greta Garbo’s cheekbones alone makes this rigid Stalinist so glacial one imagines ice mantling her shoulders, and it’s a pleasure to watch her melt into “Ninotchka” under the seductions of both Paris and Melvyn Douglas’ Count Leon d'Algout. Ninotchka received four Academy nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Original Story, and Best Screenplay.
