Z Space and Chitresh Das Institute today announce the Inaugural Season of the Chitresh Das Institute (CDI), featuring the World Premiere of The Art of Kathak, a major traditional Kathak solo performance by Charlotte Moraga accompanied by world renowned tabla master Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. The evening will also include a performance of Shradhanjali by the Chitresh Das Youth Company, and excerpts from Mantram, Moraga's newest work-in-progress. Performances are Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22 at 8 pm, and Sunday, July 23 at 2 pm.
These performances mark the inaugural season of the newly formed Chitresh Das Institute (CDI) which emerged following the untimely death of Pandit Chitresh Das in January 2015. Founded in September 2016 by Executive Director Celine Schein Das, Artistic Director Charlotte Moraga, Pandit Das' student since 1992 and a principal dancer with his company since 1996, and Chitresh Das Institute School Director Preeti Zalavadia, Chitresh Das Institute is committed to carrying forward and expanding the legacy of Pandit Chitresh Das (1944-2015) by developing education, community building and presenting programs that will make it the nerve center of Indian classical arts in the West.
"Because of the mastery required to perform the Kathak solo is so great, and because Western-based choreography and high production-value performances have begun to dominate in India, the Kathak solo is rarely performed and very few artists are being trained in this tradition today, even in India," explains CDI Executive Director Schein Das. "Charlotte is an extraordinary master and innovator of the form, following in Chitresh's footsteps."
The evening will also feature an opening performance by the highly skilled 16-member Chitresh Das Youth Company and excerpts of Moraga's forthcoming work entitled, Mantram. Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri will also perform a brief tabla solo.
