The Chimes of Normandy, also known as The Bells of Corneville, is the English version of French composer Robert Planquette's first operetta. Semi-staged and performed by accomplished singers from the entire Bay Area.
In France it has been called "the most popular French operetta of all time." Its London run of 705 performances exceeded that of its contemporary, H.M.S. Pinafore.
A standard French farce filled with people who aren't what they seem, we find Henri, Marquis of Corneville, returning to his decaying castle after several years at sea. Two village young ladies, Germaine and Serpolette, along with miserly old farmer Gaspard and young fisherman Grenicheux complicate matters, along with a letter found in the castle revealing that an infant Vicomtesse was entrusted to Gaspard's care years ago. Which is it, Germaine or Serpolette?
If you like live musical performances, you will love Chimes of Normandy.
