Changemaker Speaker Series: Deanne Fitzmaurice — Luck Is a State of Mind

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Take a front-row seat to history with Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Deanne Fitzmaurice, whose lens has captured some of the most pivotal and high-stakes moments of the past four decades. In Luck Is a State of Mind, Deanne shares the personal philosophy and behind-the-scenes stories that shaped her remarkable career documenting profound change, from the AIDS crisis to landmark Supreme Court rulings, climate change, war, and cultural icons like Barry Bonds.

Deanne spent over two decades at the San Francisco Chronicle, covering local and global events that shaped the national narrative. Her work earned international acclaim and eventually led to assignments for National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and global brands like Apple, Nike, and the Gates Foundation. Her Pulitzer-winning essay documenting a young Iraqi war victim catapulted her into the upper echelon of photojournalism.

More than just a visual retrospective, this talk is a masterclass in storytelling, creativity, and resilience. Deanne will share how she builds trust in moments of chaos, what makes a photograph unforgettable, and why storytelling, especially when done with compassion, can change the way we see the world and each other.
