Celebrate Making! An Evening with the Parkers – A Family of Master Weavers

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join an evening of lively conversation with the legendary Parker Family. Master basket maker Julia Parker, a recognized “national treasure”, is a distinguished elder of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria and longtime resident and cultural educator in the Yosemite Valley. Parker is a prolific artist, teacher and storyteller. She will be joined by her daughter Lucy Parker, her granddaughter Ursula Min-ne-ah Jones, and great-granddaughter Naomi Kashaya Jones in a free ranging conversation moderated by textile artist and scholar Deborah Valoma. The Parkers will discuss how they selected the baskets for the Randall’s current exhibit, A Tradition of Making: California Native Basketry and tell the stories revealed by those baskets, while sharing cultural wisdom connected to the lives and traditions of their ancestors. The knowledge and body of work represented by this family of weavers confirms that Native basketry is a thriving, ever-changing art form that continues to inform and inspire new generations of makers.
