Carnival of the Animals with Wendy Whelan, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, and Francesca Harper
Bringing together dance, poetry and music, Carnival of the Animals is an intentional response to the January 6 insurrection written and conceived by spoken word artist & activist Marc Bamuthi Joseph. It navigates the reality of the political jungle by embodying shifting societal values and our relationship to democracy. Choreographed and directed by Francesca Harper and anchored in the words of Joseph and the transcendent movement of Wendy Whelan, Carnival of the Animals crosses the boundaries of traditional genres and produces a unique and moving performance.
Carnival of the Animals is a vivid reimagining of Camille Saint-Saëns' classic composition over 100 years after its original publication. The contemporary score is brought to life by an ensemble of two pianos, violin, cello, and audio recordings to represent an experience of political unsteadiness.
This multidisciplinary performance, sampled with the creators' own personal journeys, reframes their relationships to gender, race, and a perpetually evolving understanding of the world. Carnival of the Animals reaches across generations to unite and energize audiences with a breathtaking performance of body, voice, and sound.
