California Revels will sponsor a day of picnicking, song, dance, at a family-friendly celebration of the ancient English Abbots Bromley "Antler Dance." This free event will take place in The Pinewood Picnic Area of Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland on Labor Day, September 2, 2019. Picnickers can arrive any time after 11:30 a.m. and are asked to bring the kids, a blanket, and favorite foods and beverages.
At 1:00 PM, members of California Revels will teach the Abbots Bromley Antler Dance to everyone to form what Revels artistic director David Parr says will be "a unique way for families to spend Labor Day." The event ends at 3:00 PM.
Now in its ninth year, the California Revels-sponsored event has gained the notice of both local and international press. Following the 11th Century tradition from the English village of Abbots Bromley, scores of folks from all over California and beyond take up the antlers of the mysterious Antler Dance. Previous gatherings have formed a human chain and danced through the meadow and woods of Joaquin Miller Park.
Participants will enjoy their picnic in a beautiful, wooded glen, mingle with fellow Revelers, sing a song or two, learn a bit about history of the Bromley Dance and then do something truly out of the ordinary: actually perform the ancient Antler Dance.
There will be music and Morris dancing, as well as called group dancing. All Abbots Bromley and traditional English dance enthusiasts are cordially invited to show up and be a part of dance history!
