This course is a condensed version of the full 1 & 1/2 day Cal-ESAR Basic Navigation course. The class covers the basics of wilderness cross country way finding using map & compass (when technology fails you) and GPS technology. The class is by donation. We are a non-profit and suggest a $25-100 tax deductible donation since a similar course is offered at other sport goods stores for $100.
Participants receive training in:
• Interpreting Topo maps
• Compass types & reading skills
• Reading, finding, following bearings
• Declination effects
• Use of GPS
• Datums
• Alternate ways to describe locations: UTM / Lat-Long
For 30+ years Cal-ESAR has conduced Wilderness Navigation courses for county sheriff SAR teams in California and Oregon, public service groups such as scouting troops and outdoor oriented clubs and organizations.
